The Hacienda de Puga was owned by Jose Maria Castaños y Lozano from 1846 until 1887. In 1861 he was Finance Minister to President Juárez, but resigned to become a deputy in the Jalisco Legislature. He was exiled to San Francisco, California from 1863 to 1866 during the French occupation of Jalisco. This Hacienda produced Sugar and had its own Mill.

In 1896 it was acquired by the Aguirre casa comercial, who managed it until 1935.

There are other, similar tokens from this hacienda that bear the date 1871.
