Non-circulating legal tender coins

Mexico has issued numerous commemorative, non-circulating legal tender coins, both in bimetallic composition and in the precious metals silver, gold and platinum. In most cases both Uncirculated and Proof commemoratives are struck in precious metals, and in low mintages. Some series have circulating counterparts, while others do not.

Some purists within collecting believes that NCLT coinage should not be viewed as or collected as coins because they do not circulate free. Other numismatists hold the view that since they were issued by an official decree of a legitimate government, have a valid denomination and have legal tender status, they are coins and therefore collectible.

The Libertad series does not have a denomination but does have legal tender status by official decree.
