Victoriano Nievez
Victoriano Nieves Céspedes was born on 23 March 1806 in the city of Campeche, At the age of 15 he moved to the Isla del Carmen and began his commercial career as a clerk of a trading house. Later he had the initiative to sell merchandise in the camps and monterías in the area, and quickly amassed a fortune that allowed him to venture into the dye wood business, first by association and later by acquiring one of the most valuable farms in the state. Victoriano Nieves benefited from the fire of 1850, thanks to the fact that he, as a lender. could begin the reconstruction of what had been destroyed by the fire. His business grew and in addition to exports of dyewood, he participated in the import business, and at the same time ventured into livestock. Although extremely rich he was admired as a philanthropist who donated money for charitable works such as the construction of the railroad from Campeche to Mérida and the construction of a hospital, among others.
He was the owner of the Haciendas Sitio Viejo, San José del Este, Santa Gertrudis and others.
He died in Carmen on 13 October 1885.
