Municipio of Dzidzantún

Hacienda San Francisco

Hacienda San Francisco was founded in 1857 by Albino Manzanilla Cámara, who gradually acquired the adjoining lands until it reached an area of 9,600 hectares. extending over what are now the municipalities of Dzidzantún, Dzilam and Temax. Unlike other haciendas, this one was very well endowed, as it had a power plant, telephone line, elementary school, ballroom, chapel, tortilla shop, and itstienda de raya. In 1904, it was equipped with a hospital consisting of an administration room, four wards, an operating theatre and the doctor's house. At the height of its boom, it had more than 2,000 workers, classified into four groups: Mayans, Yaquis, mestizos and Koreans. Dedicated primarily to henequen exploitation, it diversified its activities into cattle ranching (he came to own eleven cattle ranches as annexes), the sale of corn, fruits (coconuts, oranges), firewood, charcoal and sea salt. Thanks to the introduction of more powerful machinery , it excelled in the production of henequen fibre in such a way that at that time, it was considered the most productive hacienda in all of Yucatan, with a total of 600,000 stalks a day. However, according to the surviving ledgers, by the beginning of the 20th century - the time in which it is believed that these tokens were issued, a significant part of its income came from the sale of salt to Veracruz, Mexico and New Orléans, for which it had its own dock and barges^{Bagundo Crespo}.

Timul is about 35 kilometres northeast of Mérida, in the municipio of Motul. This hacienda was owned by Benita Palma de Campos, who also owned Chovenchi, Cabcachen and Dzununcan haciendas, alsol in Motul. Benita passed Timul to her sons, Nazario and Pastor Campos (N.Y.P.C.)
