Coffee production

Coffee has been commercially grown in the Soconusco region of ChiapasThe Soconusco region includes the following municipalities; Tapachula, Huixtla, Tuzantán, Mapastepec, Acapatahua, Escuintla, Pueblo Nuevo Comaltitlán, Huehuetán, Mazatlán, Cacahi, Atán, Unión Juárez, Tuxtla Chico, Metapa, Frontera Hidalgo and Ciudad Hidalgo for almost two centuries. In 1846, an Italian, named Jerónimo Manchinelli, started what could be called the first proper exploitation of coffee in Chiapas, by planting 1,500 shrubs at the Chácara Hacienda in the municipality of Tuxtla Chico. However, it was not until the 1880s that the cultivation of coffee became widespread in Chiapas, perhaps largely due to the studies published by Matías Romero in 1874 and 1875, in which he showed the benefits that could be obtained from this crop. Exploitation was also greatly influenced by the progressive rise in the price of coffee from 1870 onwards.

In 1883, the Mexican government officially stole the land of the indigenous peoples in Chiapas and began to parcel it off to individual land owners in order to finalize the border with Guatemala. Undoubtedly, the most important factor in the development of coffee cultivation in Soconusco was the investment of foreign capital, mainly from Germans. The Mexican government told Germany saying it would welcome immigrants willing to develop and then work coffee growing and processing plantations in the highlands of Chiapas which had been identified as prime coffee growing terrain. At the time, every harvested coffee bean (then referred to as “green gold”) in the world passed through the port in Hamburg, Germany, before being distributed around the world so reaching out to Germany for help made sense.
The colonists needed labourers to complete the difficult task of growing coffee, and through strong-arm tactics and other methods, they coerced workers into signing contracts that put them in situations similar to indentured servitude.

Tokens

These tokens were used as a means of payment for work carried out on the farm. The first of them made their appearance at the end of the nineteenth century and continued in use until they were banned by the laws emanating from the Mexican Revolution, despite the fact that the use of such tokens had been prohibited by Porfirio Díaz in 1889.

Besides denominations in either reales or pesos and centavos, some tokens refer to specific activities such as TAREA and CAJA.

A tarea (task) was cleaning a cuerda (25 varas by 25 varas or 523 metres squared) of land. Clearing was also called "weeding" (escarda), and consisted of removing all types of vegetation that grew on the plantation. This was the most frequently performed activity. The tarea took the labourer a day to do, and in 1875 he was paid from 1½ to 2½ reales, and by 1910, from 50 centavos to one peso.

A caja (box) was filling a box with a capacity of 100 litres with coffee or fruit. A caja was worth somewhat less than a tarea.

Other tokens has no denominations but merely a symbol such as a star or cresent moon.

The token were mainly produced in brass or aluminum, followed in number by those of cupronickel and copper. Some have a very rudimentary finish and will have been made on the farm itself, but most are were produced by professional firms, especially some in San Francisco, California. The following names are engraved on some tokens: C.A. Klinkner & Co. S.F., L.H. Moise, S.F., Moise K-Co. and Patrick & Co. S.F.

Cafetal Hamburgo

Finca Hamburgo 1906

Finca Hamburgo is about miles north of Tapachula, at an altitude of 4,100 feet (1,249 metres). It was founded in 1888 by Arthur Erich Edelmann from Perleberg, Germany and his wife Doris Martens. Like all of the coffee pioneers in Mexico, the Edelmann family had to plant thousands of coffee plants on incredibly steep hillsides and build facilities for the processing of coffee (they put in the first flying fox machine in Mexico) and run it all using power from their own hydroelectric plant. Back in the late 1800s when the fincas were established, it took three days to travel the 53 kilometres (33 miles) from Tapachula.

The Edelman family 1900The Edelman family in 1900

Finca Hamburgo is still run by descendants of Arthur Erich Edelmann. Nowadays, it has turned part of its original processing plant (beneficio) into a museum, full of photos and tools and other artifacts from the plantation’s early days in the late 1800s, including what is left of its ground-breaking flying fox.

Finca Argovia

Finca Argovia is located 42 kilometres (26 miles) north of Tapachula.

Luis Jacoby was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1841 and emigrated to Mexico and became a naturalized citizen. Probably around 1867 he purchased the Hacienda Obrajuelo, near the city of Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato (the Jacoby family would lose the Hacienda Obrajuelo during the Revolution). He also acquired the plantation El Horizonte in Tumbador, Guatamala on the line of the central railroad near the southern border of MexicoGrove lists three tokens from El Horizonte (Grove 1664 - 1666} as being from Chiapas. Along with his brother Martin Jacoby, Luis turned these properties into modern and highly profitable farming, cattle and mining concerns.

In 1894 Luis Jacoby and Werner Hagnauer purchased land in the Sierra Madres to create the Argovia coffee plantation.

In 1967 Anillo Industries, Inc., of Orange, California, bought at auction, 3,492 token dies belonging to the L. A. Rubber Stamp Co., which had gone out of business. Anillo attempted to go into the token striking business and, using the token dies, struck twenty five sets of aluminum manufacturer’s sample tokens. The reverses are blank and are flat since they were designed to be mounted in salesmen’s sample catalogs. It is believed that twenty-two complete sets and three partial sets of these tokens exist, including examples of the Finca la Realidad.

Finca Peru

In 1967 Anillo Industries, Inc., of Orange, California, bought at auction, 3,492 token dies belonging to the L. A. Rubber Stamp Co., which had gone out of business. Anillo attempted to go into the token striking business and, using the token dies, struck twenty five sets of aluminum manufacturer’s sample tokens. The reverses are blank and are flat since they were designed to be mounted in salesmen’s sample catalogs. It is believed that twenty-two complete sets and three partial sets of these tokens exist, including examples of the A. B. W. Club.
