Seated Liberty

These coins were struck at the Guadalajara mint and all have basically the same obverse and reverse designs. The obverse has a bow and quiver with a flag. This is encircled with the legend of either "ESTADO DE JALISCO" or "DEPARTAMENTO DE JALISCO", and the date. The reverse has the Seated Liberty holding a staff with a liberty cap on its peak, and the denomination, "UN OCTAVO" (⅛), or "UNA CUARTILLA" (¼). "UN QUARTO" is found on early ¼s. All have an obliquely reeded edge.

Early series quartos from Jalisco that have been overstamped 1/8 are found and they probably resulted from the national devaluation of 1837.
The Jalisco coinage is found with more diverse counterstamps than any other state. They include genuine mint issues plus a large number of cast counterfeits. These were mostly made for use by haciendas and sometimes businesses.

Beware of issues dated after 1861. These are contemporary fabrications that were sometimes utilized by haciendas.
