Ferrrocarril Urbano
In 1871, in order to serve the growing movement of goods and passengers between Brownsville and Matamoros, by decree núm. 67 the state authorised Domingo López de Lara to build and establish an urban railway, starting from the main plaza and ending at the port of entry in the town of Santa Cruz. This railway was inaugurated on 16 March 1873 by Eugenio Armendáiz and Domingo de Lara. A first class ticket cost eight centavos and a second class six centavos.
The railway consisted of small wagons pulled by mules, on narrow-gauge metal rails. Over the years there were several models of wagons pulled by mules and occasionally by horses, until March 1923, when the owners announced that the rails would be changed for others of greater calibre, and the animal-drawn cars replaced by motorised cars. Despite this modernization effort, the Ferrocarril Urbano ceased operations in 1930, when it was defeated by competition from automobiles.
These tokens date to after Francisco Armendáiz' death.

Camiones Puente Viejo
In 1909, the Brownsville and Matamoros Bridge Company, jointly owned by St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway and the Mexican National Railway, was incorporated to oversee construction and operation of a bridge between these two towns. Work began in April. The Foundation Company of New York laid the concrete foundation, and the Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company of Milwaukee constructed the steel spans. To accommodate river traffic, the bridge was constructed as a swing bridge, an additional expense that proved unnecessary, as river traffic grew inactive before construction was fully completed. The swing mechanism was tested in July 1910 and never opened again. Construction of the 227 foot structure cost approximately $225,000.
This first International Bridge opened for traffic on 12 December 1910. The bridge was intended to serve all land-based international traffic, including pedestrian, animal-drawn, automobile and rail. On opening day, the Brownsville Herald Brownsville Herald, published an elaborate set of tolls, including five cents for a foot passenger, ten cents for equestrians, twenty cents for an automobile with driver (plus five cents additional per extra passenger) and weight- and passenger-based charges for carriages and carts.
These tokens were issued by the Camiones Puebte Viejo with 50c for a return journey. There is an advert for the Casa de Cambio Cardenas on the back.

Gold Palace Bar
The Gold Palace was, apparently, a true brothel, located in the Zona Roja, Matamoros’ red-light district, with as many as forty prostitutes. It was established by Enrique de Nava, one of the zone’s most respected and prosperous businessmen, and later run by his widow.
