Santiago (James) C. Lohse was born in New York on 27 January 1827. He lived in Blossburg, Pennsylvania, working alongside his father in an industrial business, and settled in Mexico City at the end of 1853, dedicating himself to commerce and acquiring the reputation of a righteous merchant and an honest man. His business was importing and selling all types of industrial equipment.
Lohse had been made a Mason in Pennsylvania and once in Mexico was the founder and the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge Valle de México. During Maximilian’s reign Lohse was called to the National Palace to speak with Maximilian, who interrogated him to find out to what extent he could count on Masonic influences in support of his Empire. Lohse, an intransigent republican, manifested his true liberal principles by telling some very clear truths to Maximilian, who apparently was not displeased by Lohse's frankness and expressed his interest in Mexican Freemasonry in order to support it as much as possible. The Emperor, sought to attract Lohse to his cause, going so far as to make him a Knight of the Order of Guadalupe, frequently inviting him to the ceremonies and festivities of the Imperial Court.
Lohse died on 3 August 1918.

In 1871, in order to serve the growing movement of goods and passengers between Brownsville and Matamoros, by decree núm. 67 the state authorised Domingo López de Lara to build and establish an urban railway, starting from the main plaza and ending at the port of entry in the town of Santa Cruz. This railway was inaugurated on 16 March 1873 by Eugenio Armendáiz and Domingo de Lara. A first class ticket cost eight centavos and a second class six centavos.
The railway consisted of small wagons pulled by mules, on narrow-gauge metal rails. Over the years there were several models of wagons pulled by mules and occasionally by horses, until March 1923, when the owners announced that the rails would be changed for others of greater calibre, and the animal-drawn cars replaced by motorised cars. Despite this modernization effort, the Ferrocarril Urbano ceased operations in 1930, when it was defeated by competition from automobiles.
These tokens date to after Francisco Armendáiz' death.

In 1909, the Brownsville and Matamoros Bridge Company, jointly owned by St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway and the Mexican National Railway, was incorporated to oversee construction and operation of a bridge between these two towns. Work began in April. The Foundation Company of New York laid the concrete foundation, and the Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company of Milwaukee constructed the steel spans. To accommodate river traffic, the bridge was constructed as a swing bridge, an additional expense that proved unnecessary, as river traffic grew inactive before construction was fully completed. The swing mechanism was tested in July 1910 and never opened again. Construction of the 227 foot structure cost approximately $225,000.
This first International Bridge opened for traffic on 12 December 1910. The bridge was intended to serve all land-based international traffic, including pedestrian, animal-drawn, automobile and rail. On opening day, the Brownsville Herald{footnote} Brownsville Herald, {/footnote} published an elaborate set of tolls, including five cents for a foot passenger, ten cents for equestrians, twenty cents for an automobile with driver (plus five cents additional per extra passenger) and weight- and passenger-based charges for carriages and carts.
These tokens were issued by the Camiones Puebte Viejo with 50c for a return journey. There is an advert for the Casa de Cambio Cardenas on the back.

The Gold Palace was, apparently, a true brothel, located in the Zona Roja, Matamoros’ red-light district, with as many as forty prostitutes. It was established by Enrique de Nava, one of the zone’s most respected and prosperous businessmen, and later run by his widow.

the patio of the Washington Hotel Aguascalientes in the 1890
This hotel was already functioning by 1879. At the end of the nineteenth century it was owned by Domingo Velasco, who between 1894 and 1897 bought nearby land to expand it and by 1899 had in the "first courtyard hallway, two living rooms, twelve rooms, two dining rooms, a kitchen and a small annexed patio"{footnote}{/footnote}. In the second courtyard there were "ten rooms and a large room with six small rooms for toilets," and on calle Palmira ( now Antonio Acevedo Escobedo), had "ten rooms and a hallway for the street." In 1914 it hosted delegates to the Aguascalientes Convention.
Today, all that remains is a section of its façade, in the Plaza Fundadores.
