Counterfeits

KM-380.7 2E 1861 Ho FM contemporary counterfeit (Ponterio auction, 11 January 2010, lot 1312)

“A contemporary counterfeit that was struck from the same reverse die as the coin offered in our 14 June 1993 auction, lot 367 that was withdrawn once it was determined to be a counterfeit. Somewhat crude die work, lightly cleaned but probably good enough to pass unnoticed.
In Richard A. Long's Gold Coins of the Early Mexican Republic 1823-1873 he notes that there have been a few appearances of this date and denomination from the Hermosillo Mint and all are extremely rare, but he also cautions that there have also been a few counterfeits of this date and mint and thus scrutiny is required. The coin that appeared in our 1993 auction noted above was dated 1862 Ho FM, and apparently was not issued by that mint for circulation in 1862. The counterfeiter apparently did not know this and used the reverse die from the present coin to continue with the nefarious process”.
