One hundred pesos coins (2003 - )
In 2003 Mexico started issuing two series of commemorative coins, celebrating the states of the Mexican Federation. The first series (Type A1) featured each state’s coat of arms. This commenced in 2003 and ended in 2005. The second (Type A3) featured emblems representing each state’s history or character. It commenced in 2005 and ended in 2007.
Issued during an era of hyperinflation, these bimetallic coins were immediately hoarded due to the 92.5% silver content of their centre discs. It is unknown how many of the coins were destroyed due to the removal and subsequent melting of their silver centres, or how many survive.
