Counterfeit Late Series coinage

Cast silver, 13.23 grams. Cast from an original with legend variant "CHAROLVS" and marks on the sides of the shield between rings.

Perfectly struck on a round white metal planchet, 36 millimeters in diameter, 12.58 grams. Interesting imitation of the variant with assayer L on the right and mint M on the left, curious appearance of castles and lions, slight differences in legend typography, coin alignment. The same specimen illustrated in the counterfeit section of Robert Nesmith’s The Coinage of the First Mint of the Americas at Mexico City 1536-1572.
